US Markets:
US stocks fell on Friday after government data showed a larger-than-expected drop in July payrolls, giving investors a stark reminder the economic recovery remains slow.

Stocks had been rising over the past five weeks, largely on the back of solid corporate earnings. The S&P 500 is still up 9.7% from its closing low for the year set July 2.
The hope was that we would have a great earnings season, and frankly the S&P has delivered on that in spades," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Equity Markets in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"The disappointment is that in spite of the delivery of great earnings, you still have an economy that is not engaged and clearly not improving on the employment front."
The US economy lost 131,000 jobs in July -- more than twice the decline of 65,000 that economists forecast in a Reuters poll. And the closely watched private employment number rose less than expected.
Of the 443 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date, 75% have reported earnings above analysts' expectations, with only 9% missing estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data.
Consumer stocks ranked among the worst performers as the monthly jobs report highlighted worries about consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of US economic activity. Retailer Office Depot, which sells school and office supplies, slid 7% to USD 4.54, while the S&P consumer discretionary index shed 0.5%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 21.42 points, or 0.20%, to 10,653.56. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index shed 4.17 points, or 0.37%, to 1,121.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 4.59 points, or 0.20%, to 2,288.47.
For the week, the Dow and the S&P 500 each rose 1.8%, while the Nasdaq advanced 1.5%.
Dow component Kraft Foods Inc was among the bright spots, rising 2.4% to USD 30.36 after the company, whose products include Kraft cheese and Maxwell House coffee, reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit. Kraft also raised its target for cost savings from its acquisition of Cadbury, the British company known for its chocolates.
Shares of American International Group Inc. climbed 2.6% to USD 40.93 after its quarterly results topped Wall Street's expectations and its chief executive said the insurer is actively looking to repay its taxpayer bailout.
Shares of grain companies like Archer-Daniels-Midland Co and Bunge Ltd continued to outperform the overall market after rallying more than 5% on Thursday, on expectations their wheat exports will be increased by Russia's decision to suspend grain shipments as it faces its worst drought in a century.
Bunge shot up 2.2% to USD 55.66, while Archer-Daniels-Midland slipped 0.2% to USD 30.18.
Volume was light, with about 7.17 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, below last year's estimated daily average of 9.65 billion.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange, while on the Nasdaq, three stocks fell for every two that rose.

As per provisional data of August 5, FIIs were net buyers of Rs 73 crore; DIIs were net sellers of Rs 188 crore in cash markets. FIIs were net buyers of Rs 2,189 crore in F&O.
US Markets:
The US markets ended modestly lower after a bleak weekly jobless claims count. Disappointing July retail sales also weighed on sentiment.

In economic data, the US initial jobless claims rose by almost 19,000 to 479,000. This is the highest since early April. Economists had expected claims to drop by 2,000. Continuing claims came down 34,000 from the prior week, but they remain at uncomfortably high levels above 4.5 million.
Wall Street ends with moderate loss

Barack Obama, US President, “We have got a lot of work to do. There are a lot of trends we need to address particularly in terms of long term unemployment. So a lot of folks who went from mfg went into the construction industry during the housing bubble, that bubble popped and we got a lot of blue collared guys who are now looking for work. We have to make sure that we are providing them support. One of the things that we could do to employ those folks is in rebuilding America's infrastructure for the 21st century.”
“We have just gone through a 2 week debate on which I am trying to move a small business bill that provides exactly what you are talking about-- tax incentives to small businesses that create 2/3 American jobs, we will eliminate capital gains for start-ups. We have tried to work with the other party in getting some of these things done precisely because the recovery is still not as strong as it should be.”
All eyes are now on the July non-farm payroll data that is going to be released later today in US. The street expects loss of 70,000 non-farm payrolls and a slightly higher unemployment rate of 9.6%.
In other important cues, watch out for the Federal Reserve's hearing on new mortgage regulations and Berkshire Hathway and AIG will declare their earnings.
In the currency space the dollar edged lower versus the euro as investors avoided building large positions ahead of the US payrolls report that markets hope will offer fresh insight on the state of the economy.
In the commodity space oil prices slipped as disappointing US jobless claims and retail sales data raised concerns about the energy demand outlook. However, the dollar's weakness helped limit losses.
Base metals too are trading weak on US recovery blues. Chinese bank stress test buzz also weighed on sentiment.

US Markets:
Encouraging reports on jobs and the services sector fuelled gains on Wall Street. Both the Dow and the S&P registered their highest levels since mid May.

Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.41% or 44.05 points at 10680.43. Nasdaq Composite rose 0.88% or 20.05 points at 2303.57. Standard & Poor's 500 added 0.61% or 6.78 points at 1127.24.
In economic data, the July ISM service index came in at 54.3, which is better than the 53 that had been expected.

The July ADP employment change showed that 42,000 jobs were added to private payrolls last month. The increase was greater than the 25,000 additions that had been widely expected. Meanwhile Challenger, Gray and Christmas said planned layoffs rose 6% but were below the pace of 2009.
In key economic data to watch out for, initial jobless claims for the July 31 would be announced today. Estimates see the jobless claims falling to 455000 compared to 457000 the previous week. Meanwhile the European Central Bank and the Bank of England are likely to keep interest rates unchanged.
In the currency space, the dollar gained as encouraging US economic reports prompted some traders to unwind their bets against the greenback.
In the commodity space, crude declined marginally from a three-month high as a stronger dollar and weak gasoline futures offset impact of a government report on falling crude inventories.
Base metals rallied copper hit 3-mth high on higher risk appetite and positive economic data. Nickel and zinc too hit their highest levels since late May.
Gold hit the 1200 dollar mark for the first time in nearly two weeks, as strong physical demand lifted the metal higher for its sixth straight daily gain.

US Markets:
The US markets ended in the red but off intra-session lows after a round of disappointing economic data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.36% or 38 points at 10636.38. Nasdaq Composite was down 0.52% or 11.84 points at 2283.52. Standard & Poor's 500 was down 0.48% or 5.4 points at 1120.46.

The markets reacted to a host of not so encouraging economic data; pending home sales for June fell 2.6% month-over-month. Though that was less severe than the 5.0% decrease that had been expected, many on Wall Street had anticipated an increase.

As for other data, factory orders for June fell a worse-than-expected 1.2%, while orders for May were revised lower to reflect a 1.8% decline. Personal income, spending, and core personal consumption were flat in June. While income wasn't expected to change, a slight increase in spending had been anticipated.
In data to watch out for today the ISM non-mfg index for July is seen higher; estimates suggest the index coming in at 53 compared to 53.8 in June. The June number was the lowest reading since February.
The US energy information administration will also be releasing weekly petroleum inventories data. Crude inventories are expected to have fallen last week as imports slipped and the effect of Gulf of Mexico production was interrupted briefly by tropical storm Bonnie.
In the currency space, the dollar tumbled to multi-month lows on fears of economic recovery. As a result, the euro climbed to a three-month high.
In commodity space, crude surged to three month high above USD 82 as the dollar weakened. The API stockpile data indicated a drop. All eyes are now on the US govt's EIA numbers that's due to be released later today.

US Markets:
US stocks closed little changed on Friday, but Wall Street wrapped up its best month in a year after the earnings season rounded the final turn with a group of strong results that offset the impact of poor economic data.

While the major indexes each posted 7% gains for the month, it came during low volume and followed a combined decline of nearly 14% for May and June.
Wall Street marks best month in a year in July

The conflict between strong earnings and lackluster economic news has held stocks in a tight range throughout July. Prior to Friday's open, second-quarter GDP data disappointed investors, even though shares came back later in the session.
A lack of clear direction has led to more technical trading, with the S&P 500 finding support around 1,100 while struggling to move above its 200-day moving average around 1,115. A sustained move above that level would be bullish for investors.
"We have failed up here essentially about three times, so technically people are using that as something to lean on the short side," said Nick Kalivas, vice president of financial research and senior equity index analyst at MF Global.
Kalivas said global purchasing managers' indexes at the start of next week will give investors a better idea about the direction of the economy and could be a catalyst for markets.
"The market kind of stalled up the last couple of days. On the surface earnings numbers have been pretty strong, but underneath there was a loss of momentum," he said.
Speculators are net short the S&P 500, according to Commodity Futures Trading Commission data but trimmed their short portions from a week earlier.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.22 points, or 0.01%, to 10,465.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 0.05 points, or 0.00%, to 1,101.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 3.01 points, or 0.13%, to 2,254.70.
For July the Dow rose 7.1%, the S&P 500 gained 6.9% and the Nasdaq added 6.9%.
For the week, the Dow rose 0.4%, the S&P 500 lost 0.1% and the Nasdaq dipped 0.7%.
In corporate news, Chevron Corp, the second-largest US oil company, reported a three-fold jump in quarterly profit, topping Wall Street's forecast, but its revenue was below analysts' estimate. The shares rose 0.2% at USD 76.21.
US drugmaker Merck & Co reported a profit that beat analysts' estimates, but its sales were less than Wall Street's expectations, and the stock fell 1.7% to USD 34.46.
In the Commerce Department's first estimate of economic growth for the second quarter, US GDP expanded at a 2.4% annual rate, driven by capital investment, but the expansion was down from the first quarter's revised 3.7% rise.
US consumer sentiment plunged in July to its lowest level since November on bleak prospects for jobs and income a year since the economic recovery began, according to the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers.
The Institute for Supply Management-Chicago business barometer, however, showed businesses boosted employment and orders.
About 7.63 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, short of last year's estimated daily average of 9.65 billion.
Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a ratio of about 3 to 2, while on the Nasdaq, about five stocks rose for every four that fell.
